Power by wind

Abstract:

Wind turbines are an increasingly common structure to help our fight against global breakdown. They are massive, standing 280ft from base to center and another 111ft when a blade is at full peak. They are magnificent displays of today's advanced engineering....

Dear Tonya Buddie,
One of these wind turbines can supply energy for many homes. Many of the turbines are 2.5 MW or 2,500 kilo watts or 2,500,000 watts. GE's are 1.5 MW so if a home was using 1500 watts the turbine would supply power to 1000 homes. Usually you could say that 1 MW/per 1000 persons (not homes). Look at www.AWEA.org

If Clarkson wants to "go green" and boast being on the forefront of the new energy movement, why not employ some of these renewables on campus? This would be a great opportunity to gather long-term data and would serve as a real-world learning tool for engineers. There are many companies that are manufacturing building-mounted wind turbines that could be utilized in this regard. They are much smaller than those mentioned in this article, and some of them are even aesthetically pleasing. They generate small amounts of electricity, but coupled with new advances in LED lighting, they would be more than sufficient to power the lighting in the newer buildings that are part of the master plan.

I'm pretty sure the school applied for a grant to recieve a new wind turbine from General Electric, it'd be really cool if we got it.
