The Men's Golden Knights took on the Western Ontario Mustangs in an exhibition hockey match on Thursday before a sparser than normal crowd at Cheel Arena. However, there was no lack of game on the ice, as the Golden Knights dominated by picking up their second win in a row, 4-2.
Although Western Ontario looked stronger and quicker on the draw at the drop of the puck, the Golden Knights turned the tables early in the first period. At 3:36, Brodie Rutherglen intercepts the puck at the far blue line, and passes off to Max Kolu at about the near blue line. From there, Kolu takes the puck down the third of the sheet along the edge of the left wing circle, and fired the shot into the left side of the back of the net, past Mustang goaltender Mike D'Alessandro.
Then, on five-on-three advantage created by Mike Sellan's elbowing at 8:24 and Craig Kennedy's obstruction-hooking at 9:42, the Golden Knights doubled their lead at 10:22. The goal was scored by David Cayer from the right corner of the crease, with Brodie Rutherglen and Nathan Beausoleil getting assists for the passing from the left wing circle to in front of the goal.
In the second period, Ryan Held got caught hooking at 1:11, setting up another Clarkson score. Mike Sullivan increased the lead to 3-0 at 1:32 after receiving the pass from Mac Faulkner inside the near side of the right wing circle. Clarkson's Dustin Traylen gives up his first goal at 4:51, as Jesse Boucher's shot was blocked, but the rebound was knocked in on the right side of the net by Ryan Hare. However, within seconds at 5:18, Steve Zalewski passes to Ryan Hodkinson to pick up the eventual insurance goal.
After the goal, the University of Western Ontario pulled goalie D'Alessandro and put in Mike Boyce. D'Alessandro had twelve saves in his time in the game. Western Ontario would manage one more goal in the game, at 5:11 in the third period, as Jesse Boucher popped the puck over Traylen's shoulder. For the latter duration of the game, Boyce had fourteen saves, while Dustin Traylen got twenty-one saves in the 4-2 victory.
The Men's Golden Knights will host Niagara in Cheel Arena twice next weekend, on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
