The train whistle blared signaling the first home game for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team. Blades met ice when the Lady Golden Knights played against the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday at 2:00 p.m. It was a very well-played game as two equally determined teams were pitted against each other
The first period was relatively uneventful, both sides so evenly matched that despite a few penalties, it was twenty minutes of finely honed hockey skills. It was an excellent divided effort amongst the players on the Clarkson team, their solidarity holding strong. Mercyhurst did, however, take a few more shots on the Clarkson goal.
During the second period, things got a little more interesting. Barely having touched the ice, Christina Valesente was sent to the penalty box for protocol violation. But then the Golden Knights came roaring into the second period with Marie-Jo Gaudet scoring her first goal of the season. However, the goal was answered by Mercyhurst with two goals scored by Valerie Chouinard and Samantha Shirley with assists from Kristen Erickson, Sherilyn Fraser, Michelle Bonello, and Stephanie Jones. But goal keeper Kira Hurley was able to hold off any more goals with a total of 16 saves in the second period.
The game ended without another goal scored in the third period. With two minutes left, Clarkson pulled their goalie. But the game ended 2-1 in favor of Mercyhurst. The Lakers shot on goal 29 times to Clarkson's 13. There was a plethora of penalties throughout the game ranging from hooking to holding, to even high sticking; however, the Lady Knights were unable to use the power plays for their advantage and take control of the scoreboard. The Clarkson Women's Hockey team still has many more games to play this season at home to reach their first home victory.
