President Tony Collins has been conducting radio interviews on WTSC 91.1 FM, interacting with students to gain a better understanding of our issues and concerns. Last week was the second such interview that has taken place. The interview was composed of questions submitted by students, and follow-ups from the interviewers.
Some students had been wondering what the purpose of Campus Saftey was; were they supposed to be making sure that events around campus such as vandalism did not happen, or were they supposed to find and punish those who had perpetrated the action. President Collins said that Campus Saftey is not a strict law enforcement agency - in important situations, they call the Potsdam Police. Campus Saftey is supposed to foster a safe campus environment and provide rapid and immediate response. With trained professionals at the scene of an incident quickly, dangers and other problems can be avoided. He also talked about perhaps donating a Segway to the Potsdam Police so that they do not have such an impersonal presence on campus. President Collins remarked that the creator of the Segway had been given an honorary degree to Clarkson about four years ago.
Our campus library, which the next topic, is not a fancy or impressive building, but what matters most is that it has the online and electronic resources that it possesses. President Collins related a story he had read about a student giving a tour at Duke who said, "This is our library. It is a very nice building, but I haven't been inside in my four years here." The two main points of our library are providing a place to get the information, which is mostly online and through interlibrary loan, and as a place to study. President Collins talked about his Campus Integration Project, a plan to renovate across campus. The President wants to see a walkway like the one between New Snell and the Science Center placed from the Science Center to the ERC. It could be expanded so students could study there, and it would lead to the expanded study areas in an updated library building. Renovation is also being looked at for areas around the third floor of the science center - outside the Concrete Café, outside the COSI and the ITL labs, and outside the lecture halls. A group of architects and interior designers, including the group which worked on the amazingly flexible CAMP Atrium, are looking at ways to add about two hundred more study spaces to campus. President Collins hopes to have some drawings of proposals and more progress by early spring semester.
