The Golden Knights followed their victory on Friday night with a 6-4 victory Saturday night over the USA National Under-18 Team. The first period remained uneventful until the last few minutes when sophomore Steve Zalewski scored his first goal, assisted by sophomore Grant Clitsome and freshman Shea Guthrie.
The second period proved to be much more exiting, with the Golden Knights scoring three goals within three minutes of each other. The first goal of the period was scored by junior Michael Grenzy and was assisted by junior Mike Sullivan and sophomore Nick Dodge. Less than two minutes later, senior Jeff Genovy scored, assisted by Captain Chris Brekelmans and freshman Philippe Paquet. Then, not even a minute passed before sophomore Shawn Weller scored the last Golden Knight goal of this period, assisted by Shea Guthrie and Grant Clitsome. With eight minutes to go, the USA Under-18 Team's Nigel Williams scored their first goal, bringing the score at the end of the second period to 4-1 Knights.
Victory seemed ensured, especially when, Grant Clitsome scored the Golden Knights' fifth goal in the first five minutes of the third period. However, over the next ten minutes of game play, the 5- 1 lead collapsed to a 5-4 lead as USA Under-18 Team players Luke Popko, Patrick Kane, and Rhett Rakhshani each scored a goal in quick succession. With five minutes left to play and a tie still very possible, everyone moved a little closer to the edge of their seats as the game became more intense. However, with less than three minutes left in the game, any chance of a tie vanished when Steve Zalewski, assisted by Shea Guthrie and Shawn Weller, scored his second goal of the night. This proved to be the last goal of the game, bringing the final score to 6-4 for Clarkson. Every Golden Knight fan received one more reason to celebrate when it was announced before the end of the third period that Western Ontario defeated St. Lawrence University 4-1.
The Golden Knights will continue their home stand playing Wayne State University next weekend on Friday, October 28, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m. The following weekend, Clarkson University will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m. and Union College on Saturday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m. in Cheel Arena.
