Senior Jeff Genovy tallied twice as the Clarkson University men's hockey team prevailed over the Mustangs of Western Ontario Friday night. The first of two exhibition games was the perfect opportunity for the Golden Knights to get back on track after falling to UMASS Amherst last weekend 4-2. Although the game will not count towards their record, a pair of exhibition wins over the weekend would benefit the Knights heading into next weekend's showdown at home against Wayne State.
The Mustangs started the penalties early as Matt Manis was penalized two minutes for hooking just forty-one seconds into the game. The one man advantage proved to benefit the Knights as they tallied their first goal just a minute and seven seconds into the game. While on the power play, sophomore Shawn Weller swung the puck on left side to freshman Shea Guthrie, who kept it going with a pass to sophomore Grant Clitsome at the point. Clitsome fired a shot that got past goalie Brad Topping's right side to give Clarkson the early 1-0 lead. Western Ontario had a power play of their own just minutes later. Ontario's early play was sloppy, but on the power play they looked sharp and it proved to be enough. Chris Eade switched the point of attack when he passed over to Matt Bannon on the left side, and Bannon sent a one time slap shot off of sophomore goalie David Leggio's right pad and into the net, knotting the score at one apiece. The rest of the half played out without any scoring, and Clarkson barely held the advantage in shots with twelve to Ontario's eleven.
The second period began, and Clarkson looked unorganized with their offensive attack as they came down the ice not looking like they knew what they wanted to do. Following a Clarkson turnover, Ontario's Sal Peralta gathered the puck and sent a cross ice pass to Chris Rowan on the left side, who skated in one on one with Leggio and wrapped the puck around the outstretched goal tender, just inside the right post. With the Mustangs up 2-1 the Knights needed to answer before the lead got out of reach. Genovy was able to answer the call just under halfway through the period. Assisted by junior Brodie Rutherglen and freshman Dan Tuttle, Genovy skated in from the left side and sent a backhanded shot past Topping to tie the score. The Knights were not finished for the period-one where they would outshoot Ontario 13-5-as junior Mike Sullivan slotted a pass to freshman Philippe Paquet, who went top shelf 13:05 into the period with sophomore Nick Dodge assisting on the power play goal as well. Just over three minutes later Clarkson struck again when sophomore David Cayer increased the lead to 4-2 on a two-on-one break with junior Michael Grenzy, who assisted on the play.
