An overwhelming offensive effort did not turn out the way the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team would have hoped on Saturday, October 22 afternoon as the Golden Knights tied Wayne State 1-1 despite a 35-14 shot advantage.
Clarkson's offensive force increased throughout the game as they held a 15-3 shot advantage over the final 25 minutes, including a 12-2 edge in the third period. Although Clarkson was more active in getting shots off, it was Wayne State that led through most of the game. The Warriors scored a power-play goal at 4:01 in the second period when Lindsay DiPietro lit the lamp after being set up by Melissa Boal and Peyton Patterson.
Clarkson would continue to trail through the majority of the contest until Ashley Shaidle scored her second goal of the season with only 3 minutes and 12 seconds remaining. Shaidle's twenty-fifth career marker was an unassisted goal at 16:48 in the third period. The two teams skated through a scoreless overtime for the first tie of the Knights' season. Junior Kira Hurley made thirteen saves for the Golden Knights while Tiffany Thompson stopped thirty-four shots in her first decision of the season.
The key to the game for the Warriors was their penalty-killing effort as they held Clarkson to 0-for-8 with the man advantage while producing one goal in five chances themselves on the power play.
The Lady Knights moved to 3-2-1 overall while Wayne State remained winless at 0-4-2. Clarkson opens ECACHL play next weekend when they visit Union College on Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. They remain on the road until the following weekend.
