The Clarkson University women's soccer team, again forced to play at Potsdam State due to poor conditions at Clarkson Field, lost by a 9-0 margin in a game that was closely played through the first forty-five minutes. It was the last forty-five minutes that set the first place Dutchwomen apart from the Lady Knights. Early on it looked as though this was a game that Clarkson could pull off which would have been a major upset. Union, however, triumphed in the end and maintained their place atop the Liberty League standings.
Union had many chances throughout the first half but senior Clarkson keeper Lauren Arredondo registered five saves. Arredondo, however, was unable to stop the effort of Chelsea Hargis midway through the first half. Hargis settled a cross from Erika Eisenhut to give Union a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the half when both teams returned to their respective benches to regroup. Clarkson had to be thinking of an upset as they had held the Dutchwomen to just one goal so far, but Union had no such thoughts. They came out firing in the second half, out shooting the Knights 15-0 in the final forty-five minutes of play.
Union started the onslaught early and often with Erika Eisenhut scoring four goals at the marks of 47:03, 55:35, 57:10 and 58:09 as she recorded a whopping nine points in the game. Caitlin Cuozzo added a goal after Eisenhut's first tally as she sent a slow groundball to the left side of Arredondo. With the score already 6-0, the Dutchwomen did not let up as Ashley Brown recorded two goals of her own at the 62:40 and 84:06 mark. Stephanie Cronan and Kelly Owings assisted on her first and second goal, respectively. Karen Bertasso summed up the offensive barrage when she was assisted by Brown-five points total on the day-at the 89:52 mark.
Next Friday, October 28, will sum up the Lady Knight's season when they travel to Vassar College to make up for a postponed game from earlier in the season. Clarkson's League record now stands at 0-5-0 while the loss dropped their overall record to 5-9-1 on the season. The Lady Knights can improve to 6-3-0 at home with a win tomorrow. If they beat Vassar College next Friday, October 28, it would be their first road victory of the 2005 season.
