Nomination forms for the three awards given by Phalanx at University Recognition Day are now available to students. This article will explain more about Phalanx.
Phalanx is Clarkson's Honorary Leadership Society, founded in 1929 to recognize students who were leaders both in and out of the classroom. Just as Phalanx referred to the formation of ranks in ancient Greece, the society's constitution explains, "so does Phalanx mean the formation of those who rank in the affairs of Clarkson." Today, Phalanx is Clarkson's highest recognized honor society. The purpose of Phalanx, in addition to recognizing student leaders and their accomplishments, is to promote the interests of students in extracurricular activities, scholarship, and athletics here at Clarkson.
To recognize Clarkson's student leaders and promote interest in extracurricular activities and academics, Phalanx sponsors and organizes University Recognition Day each April. This year's recognition day will be on April 2, 2006, in the Alumni Gym. Each of the academic departments bestows awards on its best students at this event. Awards are also given to recognize faculty, employees, and academic or service oriented offices that have excelled in their relationships with students. These awards are given by a variety of groups, from the Student Senate to the families of Clarkson alumni.
At University Recognition Day, Phalanx also presents three Phalanx Awards and conducts inductions for new Phalanx members. The first award given by Phalanx is the Commendable Service Award. This award is presented to students, faculty, staff, and administrators who have demonstrated quality in service to their area or organization. It is given in recognition of especially dedicated service. Candidates for this award are selected from nominations by students, faculty, and staff.
The next award given by Phalanx, the Distinguished Service Award, is presented to a CUSA or university recognized campus department or organization. Students can nominate groups or organizations they feel have served above and beyond the activities for which they were organized. These groups should have performed service of significant benefit to the Clarkson community or the surrounding area.
