The Clarkson University men's soccer team was unable to upset a Plattsburgh State team that was ranked seventeenth in the nation Saturday. Freshman Mike St. Croix made his first career start and was quite impressive in stopping thirteen shots in ninety minutes of play. The Knights finished their season 3-11-3 overall while Plattsburgh improved to 17-1 on the season and will be playing in the SUNYAC tournament next Friday.
St. Croix allowed just one goal in the first half while facing a barrage of shots, twelve in all, while Clarkson was not able to muster a shot in the opening forty-five minutes. Plattsburgh opened the scoring 22:44 into the match when Mike Figliola scored on a penalty shot to put the Cardinals up 1-0. The second half saw more action from Plattsburgh as they wasted no time, scoring 7:50 into the second half when Brandon Gilkes put one home with an assist from Tim Stanley. Jason Sousa then increased the Cardinals' advantage to 3-0 when he scored at the 64:31 mark on an unassisted goal. Brian Copius capped the scoring for Plattsburgh at the 75:42 mark on an assist from Erik Skivington. Plattsburgh fired thirty-one shots in all while Clarkson was able to get off just two attempts, one each by junior Justin Crowley and freshman Kevin Martens.
The win was Plattsburgh's twelfth in a row since a mid-September loss to Brockport. Plattsburgh also recorded its fourth shut out in a row and eleventh of the season. The Golden Knights will look to work hard over the off season and build on a season that featured some very promising moments. The team will only mature over the winter months and will lose only senior Dan Fellegara to graduation. Next year's squad will feature predominantly juniors and seniors who will bring a great deal of experience to the field.
