This Saturday, the Clarkson Golden Knights fought for a 4-1 victory over the Union Dutchmen, bringing their overall record to 5-2-1. In the ECACHL, their record is now 1-0-1.
During a power play in the first period, sophomore Shawn Weller, assisted by sophomore Grant Clitsome and freshman Shea Guthrie, scored the only goal of the period. Surprisingly, only two penalties were called on Clarkson during the entire first period, while only three were called on Union. Luckily for Clarkson, with less than one minute remaining in the period, two of the three of Union's penalties were called, bringing the first period to a close with a double power play against Union. Clarkson goalie Kyle McNulty saved an impressive twelve for twelve shots on goal, and continued to make impressive saves throughout the night.
Clarkson took advantage of this double power play quickly in the second period as senior Jeff Genovy scored the second Clarkson goal assisted by juniors Mike Sullivan and Michael Grenzy. The score was now 2-0 Clarkson, and remained so until the last two seconds of the second period when Union's Josh Coyle scored their first goal, assisted by Lane Caffaro.
The third period was filled with penalties as the excitement grew both on the ice and in the arena. Halfway through this period, freshman Chris D'Alvise scored Clarkson's third goal assisted by junior Brodie Rutherglan and senior Chris Brekelmans, bringing the score to 3-1 Clarkson. With two minutes remaining in the game, the Union Dutchmen went empty goal as a last attempt to tie up the game. Almost immediately after the goal was emptied, freshman Shea Guthrie scored the last Clarkson goal from mid-ice, bringing the final score to 4-1 Clarkson.
The Golden Knights play away next weekend as they play Brown University on Friday, November 11 and Yale University on Saturday, November 12.
