Sophomore David Cayer recorded two goals, and six points overall, as the Golden Knights defeated the Warriors of Wayne State 5-2 Friday night. Clarkson University was successful on two of their eight power plays, while Wayne State was able to convert on just one of their nine man-advantage situations. Sophomore Shawn Weller also tallied two goals while freshman Shea Guthrie continued his strong play with four points on the night.
The beginning of the game was not as positive as the end result because Wayne State got on the board early, just 4:51 into the first period. Clarkson experienced a few good opportunities on an earlier power play, but it was the Warriors who were able to capitalize first. Clarkson sophomore goaltender David Leggio made two initial saves but was unable to stop Mark Nebus as he scored on a rebound off of an initial shot by teammate Greg Poupard. The Golden Knights, however, were able to answer with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening stanza. Following a two minute hooking penalty on Warrior Mark Cannon, the Knights took advantage of the power play as Guthrie recorded his first points of the evening. After receiving a pass from sophomore Grant Clitsome, Cayer sent a pass out in front from behind the net. Guthrie collected the puck, skated in, and put it past Warrior net minder Will Hooper. Hooper had already made two huge saves on the power play, including a stop on the goal line, but was unable to stave off the Golden Knight attack for the full two minutes. Clarkson was not happy with a tie score going into intermission as they tacked on another goal with just 3:42 to play in the period. Again on the power play, Cayer and Guthrie assisted Weller on his first goal of the night. Guthrie's pass to Weller was another pass from behind the net that Hooper was unable to recover from. Clarkson looked to be in a good position after the initial period as the Golden Knights out shot Wayne State fourteen to eight.
