If you did not get to the movies over break to see The Family Stone, you are missing out on a great holiday movie. It was not what I expected. I was expecting to see a comedy, however there was quite a bit of sadness in the movie. It made me feel like crying more than laughing. For those who are typically emotional at the movies, be prepared and bring some tissues.
Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, Luke Wilson, Ty Giordano, and Claire Danes, as well as a few others, star in this movie about a family who comes home for Christmas. Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings home his girlfriend Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) to meet his family for the first time with the intention of asking her to marry him. He is hoping to get his grandmother's ring from his mother to give to Meredith. To his dismay, his mother (Diane Keaton) refuses to give him the ring. The family does not quite welcome her as much as Everett expected. They seem to already have first impressions of her, thanks especially to his sister, Amy (Rachel McAdams). She tells everyone, or more like warns them, about Meredith before she even sets foot in the house. Meredith has a habit of clearing her throat that Amy just does not like and emphasizes every time Meredith does it.
However, the family has some surprises of their own for Meredith, including a homosexual son Thad (Ty Giordano) and a mother who has a secret of her own. The situation gets interesting after Meredith asks her sister Julia (Claire Danes), to come over for Christmas dinner. Romance occurs between her sister and Everett; at the same time, something begins to happen between Meredith and Ben (Luke Wilson), Everett's brother. The ending is good but a little sad.
There are a few funny parts, but only to break the serious tone of the movie. This movie will warm your heart, and I think this is finally a film for adults. It is a film about the bond between family and building relationships.
