The Clarkson University men's hockey team concluded the first semester on the road with a 6-4 win over Bowling Green State and a 2-1 loss against Miami (OH) University-the second-ranked team in the nation. The Knights continued their road trip in Burlington, Vermont at the Sheraton TD BankNorth Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont.
The first game of the tournament pitted the Knights against Bemidji State which ended in a 3-3 tie and Clarkson winning 1-0 in the ensuing five-man shootout. Sophomore Nick Dodge scored twice in the third period and had the lone goal in shootouts while sophomore goaltender David Leggio stopped all five shots in the shootout and recorded fourteen saves overall. Juniors Michael Grenzy and Mike Sullivan also posted strong performances as Sullivan tallied both one goal and one assist. Grenzy was busy distributing the puck as he assisted on both Sullivan's goal and Dodge's third and tying goal with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
With the victory over Bemidji State, the Knights advanced to the championship round against Vermont only to fall 3-0 in the New Year's Eve title game. A victory would have given Clarkson their first holiday tournament title since 1995. The fifth-ranked team in the country, Vermont posted a goal in each period against junior Kyle McNulty who recorded nineteen saves on the night.
The Clarkson men returned home for a January 6, Cheel Arena match-up against Rochester Institute of Technology, a new addition to Division I hockey this year. Rochester had their hands full with the Knights, who were ranked eighteenth in the nation at the time. Five different Knights scored, including three in the third period following a 2-2 tie after two periods of play. Junior David Cayer tallied once and assisted on another goal while sophomore Matt Isbister scored the game winning goal just 6:05 into the third period. Capping off the game was freshman Chris D'Alvise with a shorthanded goal on a pass from classmate Philippe Paquet while sophomore Nick Dodge added an empty-netter with eighteen seconds remaining.
