In a game of close calls and near-misses, the Clarkson University women's hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to Brown University this past Friday Night at Cheel Arena. Despite out-shooting the Bears by over a four-to-one margin, the eighth-ranked Golden Knights fell to 6-3-0 in ECAC League play and 14-7-1 overall.

While Brown managed only six shots on goal in the contest, they had the only one that mattered. Keaton Zucker shot the power play goal past Clarkson goalie Kira Hurley (five saves) for her fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Hayley Moore and junior Kathryn Moss were credited with assists. The goal negated a dominating performance in the period for Clarkson, who had three power play opportunities and consistently kept the puck in the Brown zone.

The Golden Knights turned the wick up further in the second period. Their efforts were for naught, however, as Bear goalie O'Hara Shipe (twenty-five saves) was up to the challenge. Despite a 14-3 Clarkson shot advantage and four Brown penalties, the period ended with the same 1-0 score. A combination of impressive goal play by Shipe and a series of tough breaks for Clarkson - shots repeatedly went off the goal-posts or skated harmlessly through the crease - made the difference.

The third period ended up being anti-climactic, as both teams asserted themselves defensively. Just four combined shots were seen in the period, and Clarkson eventually pulled the goalie to try and break through the Brown line. The strategy failed, and Brown took the win despite seven penalties and just six shots (opposed to two penalties and twenty-five shots for Clarkson).

Brown improves to 7-7-1 (5-1-1 ECAC) with the win. The game was the second in an eight game home-stand for Clarkson.
