Regardless of age or situation, people who consume foods in an institutional setting will complain. As a mother of a college student and a dietitian, I appreciate the hidden complexities of providing foodservice on a relatively small campus. There are tremendous efforts/costs and talents required in order to serve a variety of foods/mealtimes/settings. Besides those students requiring Halal meals, there are probably several many requiring adjustments for other non-Christian religions. Meals also must be prepared for some who have Celiac disease, severe food allergies/intolerances, Diabetes etc. When I was in college, sometimes I did not like the food. However, I did appreciate the fact that I did not have to shop, prepare or really think much about my nutritional needs beyond my own selection and consumption/activity. It did give me the opportunity to taste new foods my mother never prepared.

We all treasure home cooked meals, whether at college, an extended business trip, or even a great vacation! It is perfectly ok to politely criticize and offer ideas. Please do appreciate the many human hours/planning and preparing that goes into feeding college students anywhere.
