On Saturday, MTV U's Campus Invasion Tour made its stop at Potsdam State University. MTV U is a special channel that is more focused on the demographic of college students. It is a channel that features news, and music that universities across the country pay for.
By paying for the channel they have the ability to host events such as the Campus invasion Tour. The Featured acts for the show in Potsdam were Hellogoodbye, Straylight Run, and Motion City Soundtrack as the headline band playing.
The concert was held at Maxcy Hall in the Jerry Welsh Gym. The concert was standing room only. There were no options of where to sit besides, the back wall of the gym. Before the concert started one of the major attention getters was not on the stage but rather on the floor. The MTV technicians apparently didn't feel like running the cables that controlled the sights and sound on stage around the audience. They decided to run it directly from the stage, down the middle of the gym, to their sound and light boards. This left a large wooden bump that almost everyone tripped over.
The opening act for the show was Hellogoodbye. The band played a twenty minute set and honestly did not have a lot of energy. The major problem was that you could not understand a word that the vocalist was singing. The crowd also did not seem like they enjoyed the show that much either.
The next act was Straylight run. Their show opened up with the lead vocalist singing with an acoustic guitar while more and more of his band members were joining him on stage.
Out of all of the bands there, Straylight could be understood the most. During their set the members switched up the instruments that they were playing on. Their set even included a cello player for a few songs. The headliner Motion City Soundtrack came on with a lot of energy and kept that level up throughout the whole night. During their set the band barely took a break, going from one song to the next.
They also got the crowd involved. Asking the crowd to sing along with them and some times stopping so that it was only the crowd singing. The band played for about forty minutes before leaving the stage. After chants of "we want more" from the crowd they returned on stage to play three more songs.
Overall it was an enjoyable show but was plagued by technical problems. The sound levels were unbalanced leaving the vocals unrecognizable and drowned out by the sound of the rest of the band. During and in-between songs large amounts of feedback could be heard coming from the stage. Changeovers between bands also took a very long time. It took about twenty five minutes between Hellogoodbye and Straylight Run.
