CU Basketball loses in tournament

Out rebounded by a wide margin, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team struggled in its season-opener against Fourteenth-ranked University of Rochester, dropping a 82-54 decision in the first round of the UofR Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.

Clarkson struggled with the Yellow jackets superior size in the opening half as the team only shot 17.4 percent (4-for-23) from the floor in the first twenty minutes. Rochester owned the boards in both halves, out rebounding the Knights 51-29 in the game, including 22-7 on the offensive end.

Freshman guard Amanda Coots led all scorers with twelve points, shooting 4-for-11 from the floor. She also added four rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists in thirty minutes. Senior guard Vanessa Westcott added ten points and four rebounds as the only other Clarkson player in double figures. The Knights stayed in the game by making twenty-five of their thirty-six attempts from the free throw line.

Three players finished in double figures for Rochester as Danielle Muller led the team with twelve points. Julie Marriott added eleven points in just twelve minutes and Megan Krebbeks contributed ten points in seventeen minutes. The Yellow jackets recorded twenty-four assists on thirty field goals.

Amanda Coots scored eleven points on 4-for-6 shooting as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team ended its difficult opening weekend with a 81-61 loss to Montclair State.

Clarkson dropped to 0-2 after the opening weekend and looks to get on the winning track next weekend back in Rochester when the team takes on St. John Fisher and Nazareth.

The Red Hawks shot 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) from the field in the opening half to take a double-digit advantage into the locker room, 43-26. The second half was played tighter by the Golden Knights as the team trailed by three over the final twenty minutes and improving its shot percentage from the field (31.8 percent in the first, 52.2 percent in the second). Unfortunately, Clarkson was unable to slow the pace of Montclair State as the Red Hawks continued their impressive shooting clip with 48.3 percent in the second half.

Coots finished as the Knights top scorer for the second straight game with eleven points, making three of her four three-point field goal attempts. Junior Adrienne Juby also chipped in eleven points and four rebounds, shooting 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Junior Sarah Wesner tossed in ten points for the Knights.
