After defeating Bowling Green on Friday, the Clarkson Men's Hockey team faced off against the Miami of Ohio Redhawks in Cheel Arena on Saturday, November 25. Miami was ranked third in the country and first in their conference; on Friday night, Miami beat Saint Lawrence 4-3 in Canton. A small crowd and lack of a pep band and student section didn't stop the Golden Knights from playing well and staying alive throughout the game. The game ended in a non-ECAC win, and the instant replay system was used for the first time.
Clarkson got off to a fast start when Shawn Weller scored on the first shot of the game at 3:48. At 4:19 Miami's Matt Christie was sentenced to the penalty box for holding, giving Clarkson its first power play opportunity. Shea Guthrie took advantage the opportunity by getting a breakaway and completing a hard shot to the center of the net. This goal was his third of the season and the fourth shot on goal of the game. The defense was also strong in the beginning of the first period as they prevented Miami from taking a shot for more than eight minutes. Clarkson's goalie David Leggio made an impressive first save, but Miami scored its first goal at 14:12. Just thirty seconds before the first period ended, Clarkson's Nick Dodge got a breakaway but he and the goalie crashed on the ice next to the goal. He was called for diving, while Miami's defender Alec Martinez was called for holding. The crowd booed the call as they seemed to think Dodge deserved a penalty shot for the play. The first period ended with ten shots taken by Miami and nine by Clarkson, and the Golden Knights were ahead by one goal.
Just over thirty seconds into the second period, it appeared that the Redhawks had tied the game, but referee Alex Dell decided to review the play. This was the first time the instant replay has been used this season at Clarkson, and the tension was high in the crowd as everyone awaited the decision. It ended in the Golden Knights' favor as Miami was denied the goal and Clarkson remained in the lead. At 6:03 the Redhawks' Nino Musitelli tied the game, assisted by Jarod Palmer. They weren't ahead for long, as Brodie Rutherglen scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Max Kolu and Adam Bellows, by lifting the puck to the upper-middle right side of the net. Miami had a power play opportunity when Shea Guthrie was called for hooking at 11:33, but Leggio made consistently impressive saves to prevent them from tying the game again. At 17:42 Clarkson's Steve Zalewski scored their fourth goal, his tenth of the season, when he got a clear breakaway down the right side of the ice. At the end of the second period, the Redhawks had out-shot Clarkson, but the score was 4-2 in Clarkson's favor.
The third period saw no goals from either team, although both teams had power play opportunities. Miami's Brad Robbins was given a ten minute penalty for misconduct at 5:43, so he was out for the rest of the game. During one of Clarkson's power plays, defenseman Michael Grenzy took a shot from the blue line but just missed. Miami left their net open at 1:21 in an attempt to score another goal, but Clarkson's defense stayed strong and prevented the attempt.
The game ended with a 4-2 win for Clarkson, and goalie David Leggio, forward Dan Tuttle, and forward Brodie Rutherglen were all named stars of the game.
