At the January 22, 2007, meeting of the Clarkson University Student Association, President Collins provided updates about changes being made at Clarkson. CUSA is looking to improve the dining service and mailroom hours. CUSA has also reached a decision about how to handle the Men's Rugby team's violation of the hazing policy.
Collins stated that the new turf surface in Walker should be installed before February break, and President Collins thanked students for their input on the proposed walkway to connect the ERC and Science Center. The Honors sophomore class is working on a new calendar system to include more information about campus events. The school is also using an outside source to assess campus quality of life, and surveys will be administered in late March.
Collins discussed the recycling program that the administration is working with student groups to implement. He also added that Clarkson is applying for a grant to improve Clarkson Avenue, making it safer and more attractive with lights, sidewalks, and landscaping.
Collins also spoke to CUSA about changing the application deadline, which was formerly March 15. The new deadline is January 15, which should be more attractive to students who are applying early to other schools. The recent open house brought more than 150 high school students to Clarkson, who were hosted by current students. Collins also plans to bring up the proposed changes to the Student Activity Fee at the upcoming Board of Trustees meeting, and he expects that they will approve of it.
Progress is also being made on adding a Student Center to the campus-Collins has already discussed the plans with the executive committee, and he asked CUSA to work on a quality of life survey to find out what students think should be included in the Student Center.
CUSA will be holding a student forum at the Ross-Brooks Cafeteria, where they hope to reach more students. The Student Life Committee looked at the results of a survey about ARAMARK, which showed that students want more healthy options, as well as variety in food choices and increased hours of operation.
CUSA is trying to get meal exchange hours expanded during lunch to 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. instead of 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. like it currently is. They are hope to extend the mailroom hours to make it more accessible.
CUSA passed a motion to place the Men's Rugby team on probation until the end of the spring 2008 semester. While on probation, if the team violates any hazing, risk management, or other policies, they will lose recognition. CUSA is also working on forming a recognition policy for all campus organizations.
