A stretch of 14 games allowing four goals-or-less came to an end for the Clarkson University Hockey team in Ithaca, NY on Friday night as the Golden Knights lost for only the second time since mid-November, falling 5-1 to Cornell at Lynah Rink.
Cornell jumped out to the early lead and never looked back as it handed Clarkson its ninth straight regular-season defeat at Lynah Rink. The Big Red held a 2-0 lead before the game was five minutes old with goals by Michael Kennedy and Colin Greening, at 3:17 and 4:54, respectively. Cornell added its third goal at 14:50 of the first with Mitch Carefoot scoring.
Clarkson tallied its lone goal of the contest when junior Shawn Weller connected for a power-play marker, his eleventh goal of the season, at 16:40 with classmates Steve Zalewski and David Cayer assisting to make it 3-1 after the first.
Cornell sealed the win with a power-play marker in the second and another goal midway through the third to gain the four-goal victory.
The Big Red out shot the Knights 33-27. Junior David Leggio posted twenty-five saves on thirty shots through fifty minutes of play. Senior goalie Kyle McNulty made three saves in the final ten minutes of play against the Big Red.
Clarkson finished 1-of-5 on the power play, while Cornell was 1-of-6 with the man advantage.
After a disappointing loss at Cornell on Friday night, the Clarkson University Hockey team responded with a solid effort on Saturday as the Golden Knights pulled out a 2-1 victory over Colgate at Starr Rink in Hamilton, NY.
Ranked eighth in the country, Clarkson improved its overall record to 17-7-4 and stayed within striking distance of first place in the ECAC Hockey League, owning a third-place 9-4-3 mark, just two points behind league-leader St. Lawrence. The Knights, who lost 5-1 at Cornell on Friday, begin their longest home stand of the season next weekend when they host Brown and Yale at Cheel Arena.
Clarkson found itself behind early against Colgate when a miscue at the side of the Knights' goal between junior goaltender David Leggio and a defender left the net wide open. Colgate's Ethan Cox was able to benefit, tapping in the loose puck to give the Raiders the lead at 7:31.
Less than two minutes later, Clarkson responded to tie the game when senior Mike Sullivan connected for a power-play marker at 9:13. Sullivan took a perfect behind-the-net pass from sophomore Shea Guthrie right on his stick in the slot and hammered home his fifth goal of the season.
The Knights gained their only lead of the weekend late in the second stanza with junior Steve Zalewski's fourteenth goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Philippe Paquet made a strong rush into the Colgate zone and found Zalewski in front for the game-winner. Freshman Matt Beca picked up his second assist of the game.
Colgate out shot Clarkson 34-31, but Leggio came through with a 33 save-effort, including fourteen third-period stops to improve his record to 16-5-4.
The Knights were 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off all four Raider man-advantage opportunities.
