Most people know that election day is right around the corner. However, most people don't really care about these elections. They aren't the "big elections." The coming elections are about unimportant things, like mayor and comptroller.
Not many people seem to care about election day when it's not the Presidential or Senatorial races. When asked when election day was, many said that they did not care. One person even said that it didn't really matter. It was just local elections, and the real election day is next year.
All elections are important. The candidates for Town Councilmen spend a lot of their time campaining. Sure, it is not as publicized as the Presidential race, but it should still matter. When local taxes go up, people complain. If they had voted, maybe a different candidate would have been elected. This candidate may have even lowered taxes, but we will never know.
Do they really have the grounds to complain, when they did not vote in the local elections? The answer is no. But, these same non-voters are always the ones first to whine when things begin to change.
Many countries are not able to vote in free elections. We just take the fact that we are able to vote as given. We have lost touch with the foundations that our country was built on. Our founding fathers were ready to sacrifice their lives so that we could have the freedom to vote. "No taxation without representation" was the motto of the day. It's time that we all began to remember our roots.
We should vote in all of the elections. It should not just be a civic duty, but a pleasure as well. I know that many students here send for absentee ballots, so that they can take part in their hometown elections. I applaud you. Good job! Next election day, let's all be in line with a smile!
