Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay's Transformers astonished viewers when it entered theaters last July. The movie stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Josh Duhamel. The film marked LaBeouf's third blockbuster film during the summer of 2007, and Fox's first film on the big screen in several years.
The film was mostly noted for its incredible special effects, which were fairly dazzling. Surprisingly, however, the acting seemed to overshadow the special effects. LaBeouf's attempts to woo Fox went beyond the standard "nerd winning the girl" plot line. Many of the scenes were genuinely funny, yet endearing. The plot wasn't spectacular, but the film realized that and wasn't afraid to make fun of itself. Hardcore Transformers fans will notice several references to the old show.
Eventually, all of the characters united and engaged in a mind-numbing battle. Explosions, lasers, and bullets filled the screen for nearly half an hour. This section marked the first time that the movies' villain, Megatron, was seen. As a result, the movie did lack any sort of depth or insight when dealing with its robotic villains. The Autobots, the heroic robots, were provided with plenty of time to showcase their personality and plights to viewers. Presumably this was because the movie was already over two hours long.
The overall effect of the movie is still something spectacular. Converting a children's cartoon into a PG-13 action movie seemed questionable, but Bay pulled it off. It appears that with the success of Transformers that we can expect to see much more of both Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf over the next few years. Hopefully, these films will be of the same quality.
