At the November 12, 2007 meeting of CUSA, the issue of blue lights and the idea of smart cards were brought up.
There are two blue lights on campus that are not working. Currently, Campus Safety does not have any money in their budget to repair these lights. CUSA would like to work with Campus Safety to help raise funds to replace two lights this semester and, hopefully, two more next semester. First they need to get an estimate on these lights and will then proceed through the right channels to raise the money.
"I don't think that's appropriate," said Senator Tobin. "You need to have every blue light working around campus… That's a safety issue."
President Snyder will be meeting with David DeLisle, Director of Campus Safety & Security, during the week.
The Student Life Committee is working with the SB113 business class to develop the smart card idea. They would like to have our cards available for use in the community, like SUNY Potsdam's Bear Express.
SUNY Potsdam's Bear Express is a declining debit account that can be used at the school bookstore, vending machines, washers and dryers, select stores in Potsdam, or used towards tickets or health prescriptions. The stores in Potsdam that accept the Bear Express include Domino's, First Crush Bistro, Arby's, Burger King, The Bagelry, Little Italy, Northern Music & Video, Wear on Earth, Misty Hollow, McDonalds, and numerous other locations.
The project has been shut down by Kurt Stimeling. However, they are going to work with SAS in order to try to provide something to the students. They are looking to outsource the idea in order to help move the project along.
