Tropical cyclone Sidr, the worst storm Bangladesh has seen in a decade, destroyed many thousands of homes and killed more than 1,700 people. More than 4,000 people were injured. One million people along the coast were forced to evacuate their homes.
Many of these people returned to find that their homes were completely destroyed by the 150 mph winds. They stated that they need assistance to rebuild and get their lives back together. Sidr had a four-foot wide storm surge that submerged offshore islands and low-lying coastal areas.
Many people that were still alive were stuck because of roads blocked by flooding and fallen trees. Rescuers that were trying to reach these people had to get there by bicycle and boat. Local officials were assisted by the national government and international organizations.
According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, 773,000 houses were damaged. They also stated that about 2.7 million people were affected. Bangladesh's total population is approximately 150 million. Cattle and poultry, along with many acres of crops, were destroyed. The government of Bangladesh gave $5.2 million for rebuilding damaged houses. The European Union gave $2.2 million to the country, and Germany gave $731, 345. The World Food Program was also giving food to the country.
Many of the people did not have food, water, or power. One and a half million people living along the coastline were in government shelters and given emergency rations. Other survivors were living under tents or sheds made up of pieces from what was left of their homes.
