The days of waiting outside the laundry room for an empty washer or dryer are over. At least, that seems to be the consensus from students who've seen the new Laundry View. Laundry View is a service provided to the Clarkson community to tell students when and where laundry facilities are available, as well as to report when and where the washers and dryers are in peak demand. The website, www.laundryview.com, reports exactly which washer and dryers are open.
The company's website reports "Laundry View's mission is to help you save time by providing information about the current state of the laundry room equipment whenever you have access to a browser or e-mail messages." In other words, no more waiting for your own clothes, or anyone else's clothes, to dry.
In addition, the website has other features, such as timers telling you when your laundry is ready. You can log in and have e-mails or even text messages sent to you when your clothes are dry or clean.
The website has a virtual representation of each laundry room on campus, as well as a key to report exactly which washer or dryers are running. The key reports which washers and dryers are available and which are out of order. In addition, the site keeps track of idle washers or dryers, meaning the time has elapsed and the cycle is done, but the door has not been opened yet. The key distinguishes between washers and dryers and shows the correct placement of each machine. There is a zoom feature in case you cannot see something properly.
Each individual laundry room has its own set of statistics that display when the best and worst times to do laundry are. For instance, any time seen in red, such as Moore House's three to four in the afternoon slot, suggests that in the last two weeks, more than two thirds of the machines were in use during this time. The yellow boxes, on the other hand, mean that one third to two thirds of the washers and dryers were available. White boxes represent a time when less than one third of the laundry equipment was being used.
In addition, by hovering your mouse over a particular washer or dryer, one can see exactly how much time is left. In classic mode, one can see a layout of all of the machines in a particular room, as well as the estimated time left on each one. The "Need a Machine" button even takes a registered user in to find a local machine. Now no one has to suffer the humiliation and hassle of getting their laundry down to the laundry room, just to find out that all washers are full.

This is a very good idea to help students to save time. It increases the efficiency in something that people do not want to do but have to do. Now they have more time to do important things. (Continued…)
