After a disappointing loss to Hobart on Friday night, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team shocked Hamilton, winning 63-53 for only the Knights' second win over the Continentals at Hamilton in the past thirty-five seasons, to give the Knights second place in the Liberty League.
The Knights improved to 7-11 and 5-2 in the conference, tying for second place in the league at the midway point of the conference slate, while Hamilton dropped to 12-5 overall and 5-2. Clarkson returns to action on Tuesday at home against St. Lawrence. Clarkson immediately came out and played fearlessly against the Continentals, earning the lead midway through the first half and never again falling behind. In fact, the Knights more than held their own against Hamilton, holding a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half, before the Continentals finally cut the lead to ten points.
Ryan Smith led the Knights with twelve points in just twenty-two minutes, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor. Senior James Evans also added in eleven points, coming off the bench, making four of his five attempts from the field. Clarkson out rebounded the Continentals 45-27, commanding a double-digit lead in rebounds for the second straight night. Clarkson committed twenty-nine fouls, with two players being disqualified for too many fouls, but still were able to hold on despite the rather significant disadvantage in whistles.
Along with Smith and Evans, Brandon Linton scored eight points and added in seven assists. Jay Simpson scored twelve points to lead Hamilton and Joe Manns scored ten points for the Continentals. Hamilton shot just 32.6 percent from the floor (14-for-43), but the Continentals kept the game close by taking twenty more free throws than the Knights.
