It's now crunch time in the ECAC, as only six points separate the top seven teams in the conference. Every league game carries an air of importance, with each win or loss affecting positioning in the ECAC rankings.

Last week the Clarkson Golden Knights faced off in an important game against a Cornell team just two points behind our league leaders. The action began with Cornell out shooting the knits at a 6-0 advantage. Their efforts were rewarded with an opening power play goal at 12:10 of the first period. The Clarkson penalty kill has been a cause for concern with only a woeful seventy-eight percent success rate at killing the man advantage.

The Golden Knights fought back to even the score courtesy of a Scott Freeman goal. Assists on the goal were credited to Shea Guthrie and Chirs D'Alvise.

With the game tied, the momentum quickly shifted again in Cornell's favor. Goaltender David Leggio rose to the occasion with repeated saves from point blank distance to preserve the first period tie. At the end of the first period, the score was tied at one with shots on goal at 13-7 in Cornell's favor.

The second period began with the same flair as the first. Clarkson took an early penalty within thirty-five seconds of the frame courtesy of a Matt Becca hooking. Cornell turned up the pressure once more, taking four shots on the power play. David Leggio once again proved to be Clarkson's most stout penalty killer with saves of all variety. The Golden Knights withstood the Big Red pressured and countered with a power play goal of their own when Nick Dodge buried a loose rebound into the top corner of the net. Assists were given to Grant Clitsome and David Cayer. The second period ended at with a 2-1 score in favor of Clarkson. Shots on goal heavily pointed to Cornell's advantage at 23-16.

The third period saw no lead changes as David Leggio continued his stellar work in net, nullifying the Big Red's advances time after time. Clarkson scored a short handed goal to extend the 2-1 margin at 6:02 of the third on a Matt Becca goal. Becca put together a fine scoring highlight by out maneuvering a Big Red defender at the left circle and connecting on a well placed wrist shot. The assist on the goal went to Tyrell Mason. Clarkson added another goal at 18:54 of the third when Cornell had pulled goalie Ben Scrivens in a last attempt effort to tie the game. The empty net goal was scored by Grant Clitsome to guarantee the Clarkson victory at 4-1.

Last week's victory gave Clarkson a four point cushion in the ECAC standings. The Golden Knights improved to 11-3-1 while the Big Red fell to a 9-5-1 league mark.
