The Clarkson Environmental Conservation Organization is an organization dedicated and designed to promote campus awareness of environmental policies and issues. The ECO hosted Focus the Nation teach-ins at Clarkson a few weeks ago. These teach-ins dealt with many different aspects of climate, including science, impacts, policy, ethics, solutions, and actions. ECO is also partially responsible for bringing about Clarkson Recycles. The organization sent representatives to the climate summit in Bali, and Powershift as well.
Several ECO members are also members and/or officers in the other two environmental organizations on campus: NYWEA and EWB. ECO is generally a part of all environmental campus-wide activities, whether it involves climate change, buying SO2 permits, or community health and well-being. For example, the NY DEC auctions off SO2 permits, which allow emitters of the pollutant to pollute a certain amount, as long as they get a permit at auction. This is similar to a cap-and-trade system used for other pollutants. A permit is retired after seven years of use.
One of ECO's future projects is composting the food waste from Ross-Brooks Cafeteria. Most ECO members try to enjoy the environment and understand its importance, as well. Many are also members of CUOC, as a result. ECO normally meets on Mondays 7:00 p.m., every week in SC176A.
