What is left of an old rivalry was renewed Saturday night as the Golden Knights made the trip across from Albany into Troy. The RPI Red Hawks had embarked on a campaign to incite rabid fan support with a riveting radio plea from RPI coach asking the fans to support their five win team. The response was less than the foaming at the mouth mob mentality the coach had pleaded for.

Playing in the Spartan confines of a Houston Field House, the Golden Knights dismantled any false sense of confidence the Red Hawks may have acquired during their week of pep rallying with a 3-1 victory.

Clarkson scored goals in every frame while limiting the Red Hawks to a mere seventeen shots on goal. Scott Freeman gave the Knights a 1-0 lead by generating a turnover and rewarding his own alert play with a goal into the top corner of the RPI net.

The Golden Knights extended their lead in the second period by capitalizing on a five-minute power play with thirteen seconds left when Nick Dodge buried a lose rebound where he only saw fit to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Assists were given to Matt Beca and Grant Clitsome.

The third period was devoid of scoring until closing moments when Nick Dodge added a shorthanded goal to his resume on an empty net goal with just forty-four seconds remaining. This gave Clarkson a 3-0 lead. The surely unblemished victory was soiled with just one second remaining in the game as RPI finally debuted on the score sheet with a power play shot from the blue line, which found its way into the net. It should be no surprise that the remaning second was not enough time for RPI to mount further rally.

End of the weekend notes: The Golden Knights moved to 13-4-3 with the tie and victory this weekend. The fate of the ECAC will fall on the regular season's final weekend as the Golden Knights have a miniscule one-point margin separating them from second place Princeton. The two teams will meet next week in a marquee match up to determine the rightful winner of the division crown.

Just so you know the RPI hockey team is known as the "Engineers" not the "Red Hawks". That ornithological name is reserved for several of our div iii teams like baseball, etc. (Continued…)
