For all those of you busy complaining about the infamous Clarkson ratio, there was good news Friday night. Over seventy females were brought to campus. The Potsdam area Girl Scouts came to Clarkson in a yearly event sponsored by SWE (the Society of Women in Engineering). The girls aged about seven to nine enjoyed math, science, and engineering- based events as well as a pizza dinner and a host of activities, including a late night swim.
To begin the night, the girls arrived between five and six in the evening and found pizza and soda awaiting them. They each received a color-coded name tag which determined the group that they would be in for the night. Following pizza, they were treated to a NASA presentation and were then split up into their groups in make new friends and embark on their adventures.
The girls made their way through a series of stations, and each taught the girls a new science-related idea, while entertaining them. The stations themselves varied from a paper airplane station focused on aerodynamics to a 'Gak' station with a more chemical focus. There was a pH indicator activity, as well as a chemical appearing act with some newspaper print. The Girl Scouts also tried their hands at making lotion and performing a few simple 'water wonders.'
After almost all was said and done, the girls began their final challenge with their new friends: the tower-making competition. Given only about half an hour, a box of spaghetti and a bag of marshmallows, each group of girls set to work at making a tower to top all of the others. Some of the towers went as high as an adult's waist level.
At the end of the day though, these girls still weren't done! They all headed over to the IRC for a dip in the pool and some time to just be kids and have fun.
