On Wednesday, September 17, the U.S. Coast Guard seized a submersible vessel that was carrying seven tons of cocaine, with an estimated street value of 196 million dollars. This was the second time within a week that the U.S. Coast Guard had seized cocaine onboard a submarine.

The Fourteenth Annual Shipley Distinguished Lectureship was delivered by renowned organic chemist Jerrold Meinwald on Thursday, September 18. His comical presentation on "Violence, Sex, and Drugs in the World of Insects" was delivered to an audience of students, staff and faculty that nearly filled Science Center 360.

A story of two gases

Last Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Snell 212, the Biology department hosted its second biweekly seminar of the school year, presented by Dr. Nathaniel E. Ostrom from the Department of Zoology at Michigan State University. His presentation, "A Tale of Two Gases: The Biogeochemistry of 02 and N20," featured the histories of both gases followed by a highlight of the research that he has been working on.

On Monday, author, television news anchor, journalist, and judge Andrew Napolitano presented his ideas regarding the government's abusive relationship with the U.S. constitution. Napolitano introduced the topic of abuses to the first and fourth amendments with a series of anecdotes about the year 2000 presidential election recount and a couple of jokes.

Student was fine and advised to call home. 9/13/08 10:45 a.m. Medical Emergency Moore House Student transported to Canton Potsdam Hospital by private vehicle after suffering from alcohol poisoning.

Police Blotters

9/14/08 9:43 p.m. Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd Patrols initiated a traffic stop on the listed suspect and further investigation revealed that the suspect had a suspended license. Traffic summons was issued for same. 9/15/08 Potsdam Police and Potsdam Fire Department were busy running calls for trees and power lines down as well as conducting traffic control during the wind storm.
